We don’t grow in the gym, we grow outside of the gym. The first time I heard this concept I was extremely confused. I had a huge misconception when I was growing up in the fitness atmosphere. I had no idea what I was doing nutritionally and thought the reason I wasn’t seeing results was because I wasn’t working hard enough in the gym. For the most part, I believe that people understand the concept of recovery. Workout hard and gets lots of protein in your diet right? While this perspective is correct to a certain extent, it is still missing the larger picture. My goal with this blog is to create the proper perspective when it comes to recovery. I want to provide you with the proper mindset and tools to see effective sustainable results. I’m convinced that if we look at the larger picture, we will be more effective in our nutrition, training, and mindset when it comes our fitness lifestyle. Create stressor - REcover- adapt (Grow)While this equation is extremely simple, it involves a lot more than one would think. Let’s break it down. Create Stressor In order for our bodies to grow we have to experience a stressor that are bodies are unaccustomed to. This can be done in multiple ways. Some options include increasing exercise frequency, time under tension, type of exercise, weight, repetitions, different angles, and/or vby utilizing different contractions (eccentric, concentric, isometric). Proper exercise programs strategically create stressors on a weekly basis. Recovery This is the main point of this blog and something that isn’t understood correctly. Although, this is the second step to the equation it is the most important. If we do not recover properly then we cannot adapt. We can have the best workout program in the world but if we cannot recover then it is useless. Let’s dive into some of the components of recovery.
We have it backwards! We spend so much energy on trying to find the perfect workout and perfect routine that we don’t create proper recovery habits in our daily lives. In my humble opinion, I don’t believe we should even worry about creating stressors (exercise) until we have a solid foundation for our recovery tactics. Fitness is supposed to enhance quality of life. If we create stressors in the gym but have no way of recovering from them are we in fact enhancing our lives? Start with recovery.
